vision18 > Sabine Schut-Kery and her Andalusian look like they're carved out of marble. Soft, warm marble.

vision18 > Sabine Schutt-Kery opened the ceremonies each day carrying the flag on either an Andalusian or a Friesian. This is the Andalusian, and Sabine did a great job managing the flag in one hand and the horse in the other. Both her horses were participating in the high spirits generated by the crowds, which added to the excitement of the presentations. Odd photo; it looks like the horse is sliding down hill to the right, yet the rider and flag are perfectly vertical.)

vision18 > Painted Black. What an exciting horse, and he gave all he could to his rider and his fans. His final score was half a point behind Steffen's and Ravel's. A worthy opponent.

vision18 > Anky van Grunsven and Painted Black (above) made Steffen Peters and Ravel work extra hard to maintain the lead they established on Thursday night. With movement like this, you can imagine how powerful and supple Painted Black is. (I'm tempted to call him "The Black," but it's unlikely that Anky knows about the Black Stallion series.) He has a huge "engine" and knows how to use it. You can see him powering out of the corner in the next picture.

vision18 > This is Painted Black changing gears, as he steps on the gas and powers out of the corner into the extended trot up the diagonal. The picture shows the energy in the haunches, the freedom in the shoulder, and the scope of his stride.

vision18 > Jan Ebeling and Rafalca are practicing the passage. Each of the horses and riders had a fifteen minute schooling session on Wednesday afternoon, before the dressage competition began on Thursday night.

vision18 > In a soft and pretty passage, Rafalca shows that she knows how to do it all. My late arrival on Thursday night prevented me from seeing her and Jan go. She did not qualify that night to show in Saturday's Freestyle competition, so I missed the pleasure of watching any of Rafalca's tests.

vision18 > Jan Brink rode Bjorsells Briar 899 and showed why he's enormously popular in Europe. He's a lovely horse, strong and well-balanced. This is a picture-perfect pirouette executed by this Swedish stallion.

vision18 > Briar in competition giving us a lovely passage down the centerline. He's beautifully strong in this movement.
